« For very many people, discovering a spiritual teaching is
cause for great joy. At last, they have found it! Yes, but things aren’t that
simple. When they accept a spiritual teaching, however high it is, they may
find that, after a month, six months, a year, depending, they begin to feel a
sense of agitation creeping into them, and any efforts they make, instead of
intensifying the positive side, only develop their negative side. Why is this?
Because any new idea, any new state of consciousness produces fermentations in
those who are not ready to receive them.
Jesus said, ‘No one puts new wine into old wineskins;
otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the
skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.’ The new wineskins represent
the stable, robust forms that human beings must prepare within themselves, so
that they are able not only to bear a new way of seeing things, but also to
adopt the appropriate behaviours. When they have harmonized with this new
philosophy, that is, when they have prepared their physical body and their
psyche, they are able to withstand the tension produced by the new currents to
which they will now be exposed. »
